Karoon Energy Ltd (ASX: KAR) shares ended Friday as the strongest performer in the S&P/ASX 200, jumping 10.84% to close at A$1.79.

The oil and gas producer gained A$0.175 during the session, rising from its previous close of A$1.615. Meanwhile, the broader S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.76% to 8,772.3 points. The sharp move was supported by surging crude prices, stronger performance at Karoon’s Baúna operation, and an upgrade from RBC Capital Markets.

Oil Price Rally Boosts Karoon Energy Shares

Oil prices provided the biggest market-wide catalyst for Friday’s rally.

Brent crude jumped 7% on Thursday to settle at US$100.69 a barrel, its highest level since May. The increase followed attacks on Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea, raising concerns that escalating Middle East tensions could disrupt global crude supplies.

Brent later eased during Friday’s trading session but remained close to US$100 a barrel. Elevated oil prices can improve the revenue outlook for producers because they receive more money for every barrel sold.

Karoon Energy has producing assets in Brazil and the United States, giving the company direct exposure to changes in global oil prices. The S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index gained 0.93% on Friday, but Karoon’s 10.84% rise was much stronger, showing that investors were also reacting to company-specific developments.

Strong Baúna Performance Supports Confidence

Karoon Energy released its second-quarter report on Thursday, one day before the share-price surge.

The company produced 1.08 million barrels of oil equivalent during the June quarter and generated sales revenue of US$116.4 million. Karoon said materially higher realised oil prices supported the revenue result.

Its Baúna operation in Brazil delivered operating efficiency of about 97%, above the company’s target range of 90% to 95%. All production wells associated with the project were back online, with production running at approximately 22,000 barrels of oil per day.

Karoon also said it expects stronger free cash flow in the second half of 2026 as production increases and capital spending falls. However, that outlook remains dependent on oil prices and operating performance staying supportive.

RBC Upgrade Adds Another Catalyst

RBC Capital Markets upgraded Karoon Energy from Sector Perform to Outperform on Friday and maintained its A$2.00 price target.

The broker expects Karoon’s production to improve during the second half of the year following the return of the Baúna wells. The upgrade provided another positive signal and likely added to buying interest in the stock.

What Should Investors Watch Next?

Karoon Energy maintained its 2026 production guidance of 7.2 million to 8.2 million barrels of oil equivalent. Investors will now watch whether Baúna can maintain its improved reliability and production rate.

The company ended June with net debt of US$269.7 million and total liquidity of US$363.6 million. At its Who Dat operation in the US Gulf Coast, work is continuing on removing and potentially replacing a damaged production riser.

Friday’s rally was not driven by oil prices alone. Higher crude prices improved Karoon’s earnings outlook, stronger Baúna operations supported investor confidence and RBC’s upgrade attracted more attention to the stock.

Karoon’s next move will likely depend on whether oil prices remain elevated and whether the company can deliver its full-year production targets.
