Generac Holdings (NYSE:GNRC) stock surged Thursday after the company disclosed a major long-term agreement to supply backup generators for Amazon data centers. GNRC shares jumped more than 30% in premarket trading on September 17 before paring some of those gains after the opening bell. The reason for the excitement is clear. Generac has secured a large new source of demand from Amazon as spending on artificial intelligence and data-center infrastructure continues to grow.
What Did Generac Announce?
Generac and Amazon entered into a transaction agreement on September 16, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. At the same time, the companies entered into a long-term supply agreement covering backup power generators for Amazon data centers.
Generac said initial generator deliveries are expected to total US$2.4 billion across 2027 and 2028. That is a significant amount of future business and gives investors greater visibility into demand from the fast-growing data-center market.
Where Does the US$8 Billion Figure Come From?
The US$8 billion figure needs some explanation. As part of the agreement, Generac issued a warrant to Amazon.com NV Investment Holdings LLC, a wholly owned Amazon subsidiary.
The warrant allows Amazon to acquire up to 1,693,745 Generac shares at an exercise price of US$200.9266 per share. Of those shares, 307,954 vested immediately.
The remaining warrant shares can vest in stages based on payments Generac and its affiliates receive from Amazon and its affiliates for backup generators, with those payments measured up to US$8 billion. That means investors should not read the agreement as a guaranteed US$8 billion order.
The confirmed figure disclosed by Generac is US$2.4 billion in expected initial deliveries during 2027 and 2028, while the broader relationship has the potential to become much larger.
Why Is This Important for Generac?
Generac is best known for backup power equipment used by homes and businesses. But data centers are becoming an increasingly important growth market.
AI computing requires huge amounts of electricity, and large data centers need reliable backup power in case of grid failures or other disruptions. Generac had already been expanding in this area.
In June, the company announced a global supply agreement with a leading hyperscale data-center operator for backup power generators, although it did not publicly identify the customer at the time. The Amazon agreement now gives investors much clearer evidence of the scale of that opportunity.
Why Is GNRC Stock Surging?
The market reaction appears to reflect several factors.
First, US$2.4 billion in expected initial deliveries is a substantial amount of business.
Second, the agreement connects Generac directly to Amazon’s growing data-center infrastructure.
Third, the structure of the warrant suggests the commercial relationship could expand further if Amazon-related purchases increase over time.
The warrant can be exercised on vested shares through September 16, 2033.
What Should Investors Watch Next?
Investors should now watch how quickly Generac converts the Amazon agreement into actual revenue and whether additional data-center customers are added. Margins will also matter.
A large increase in data-center sales can be positive for revenue, but investors will want to see whether those contracts also support strong profitability and cash flow. Any additional guidance from Generac around production capacity, delivery schedules and future hyperscale customers could also move GNRC shares.
Bottom Line
Generac’s Amazon agreement is a major development for GNRC investors. The company expects US$2.4 billion in initial backup-generator deliveries during 2027 and 2028, while additional warrant vesting is tied to Amazon-related payments that can reach as much as US$8 billion.
That does not mean Generac is guaranteed to receive US$8 billion. But the agreement gives investors stronger evidence that data centers are becoming an important growth market for the company.
With Amazon now directly attached to that story, it is easy to understand why GNRC stock became one of the market’s biggest movers Thursday.
