ASX lithium stocks sold off heavily on Tuesday 13 October 2026. PLS Group fell 8.6% to A$3.08, while Mineral Resources, IGO and Vulcan Energy Resources each lost between 6.5% and 12.4%. The sell-off followed an EU plan to cap imports of Chinese hybrid cars, which added to worries about lithium demand as Chinese lithium prices fell sharply.
How far ASX lithium stocks fell
Closing moves on Tuesday, according to Market Index:
| Company | Close | Move |
|---|---|---|
| Vulcan Energy Resources (VUL) | A$1.20 | -12.4% |
| PLS Group (PLS) | A$3.08 | -8.6% |
| Elevra Lithium (ELV) | A$4.24 | -7.0% |
| Mineral Resources (MIN) | A$45.81 | -6.7% |
| IGO (IGO) | A$5.51 | -6.5% |
PLS, the sector bellwether, is down about 21% over three sessions. Its year-to-date return has swung from a peak of about 60% to a loss of 26%.
What the EU did
The EU plans to cap Chinese hybrid car imports at 350,000 vehicles a year from as early as 1 December. That is roughly 45% below this year’s pace. After talks in Beijing, EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic said on Friday that China and the EU had reached a deal that could cut Chinese hybrid car exports to the bloc by more than half.
Fewer Chinese hybrids sold in Europe means fewer batteries, and less lithium demand from China’s carmakers.
How far lithium prices fell
On Monday, the most active lithium carbonate contract on China’s Guangzhou Futures Exchange fell 11.8% to 104,740 yuan a tonne, its steepest one-day drop since March, according to Reuters. It briefly touched its lowest level since 17 December 2025.
Prices are now roughly half their 13 May peak of 209,880 yuan, a 33-month high. Analysts at Orient Securities said the market doubts lithium demand, while worries about demand in 2027 have also weighed on prices.
Why it hits ASX producers hard
Most Australian lithium miners sell spodumene concentrate, and its price tends to follow Chinese lithium prices. That makes producers such as PLS and Mineral Resources sensitive to swings in Chinese demand.
Not all the news has been bad. Last week, Elevra signed a three-year spodumene supply deal with LG Energy Solution for a base volume of 240,000 dry tonnes, according to Market Index.
What lithium investors should watch
- Whether the EU cap is finalised, as the 350,000 limit is still a plan
- Chinese lithium carbonate futures, the most closely watched price signal
- Quarterly reports from ASX lithium producers in the coming weeks

Bottom line
ASX lithium stocks fell sharply after the EU moved to cap Chinese hybrid imports and Chinese lithium prices dropped to their lowest level since December. With prices now about half their May peak, investors are reassessing how quickly lithium demand can recover.
