ResMed Inc. (ASX:RMD) shares plunged approximately 6.5% on Monday, November 2, 2026, despite the sleep technology company reporting stronger-than-expected quarterly earnings. The decline wiped roughly A$3.5 billion from its market value, raising questions about why the ResMed share price fell when both revenue and adjusted earnings exceeded expectations.
The selloff appears to reflect concerns about slowing revenue growth, weaker reported software sales and unchanged full-year guidance. It also followed a sharp decline in ResMed’s US-listed shares after the earnings announcement.
ResMed Shares Fall Despite Strong Quarterly Earnings
ResMed released its first-quarter FY2027 financial results on October 29, reporting revenue of US$1.415 billion, an increase of 6% compared with the previous year.
Adjusted earnings per share reached US$2.91, up 14% year over year. Both revenue and adjusted earnings exceeded reported analyst expectations of approximately US$1.39 billion and US$2.69 per share, respectively.
However, investors appeared more concerned about the company’s future growth prospects than its headline earnings performance.
ResMed’s New York-listed shares fell approximately 9.1% on October 30, before its ASX-listed securities experienced a similar reaction when Australian trading resumed on Monday.
The decline highlights how companies can deliver stronger-than-expected earnings while still disappointing investors who anticipate faster growth.
Slower Revenue Growth Raises Investor Concerns
One concern was ResMed’s slowing consolidated revenue growth.
Reported year-over-year revenue growth moderated to 6% in Q1 FY2027, compared with approximately 9% in Q4 FY2026.
Nevertheless, demand across ResMed’s core sleep and breathing health business remained healthy.
Global sleep device revenue increased 9% to US$716 million, while masks and accessories revenue climbed 10% to US$540 million.
Total Sleep and Breathing Health revenue reached approximately US$1.26 billion, representing 8% annual growth.
These figures demonstrate continued demand for products used to treat obstructive sleep apnoea and other respiratory conditions.
However, the slower consolidated growth rate may have disappointed investors expecting stronger momentum from the company’s established sleep technology operations.
Software Business Reports Revenue Decline
ResMed’s Residential Care Software division also attracted attention following a decline in reported revenue.
The segment generated approximately US$155 million during the quarter, down 7% from US$166 million a year earlier.
However, the decline was influenced by portfolio changes, including the September 2026 sale of MatrixCare.
On a core constant-currency basis, Residential Care Software revenue increased approximately 5%.
This distinction matters because the reported contraction does not necessarily indicate deteriorating demand across ResMed’s remaining software operations.
Nevertheless, the smaller reported software contribution weighed on overall revenue growth and may have influenced investors’ assessment of future earnings momentum.
Unchanged FY2027 Guidance Adds to Market Disappointment
Another potential contributor to the selloff was ResMed’s decision to maintain its existing financial guidance.
Management reaffirmed its FY2027 reported revenue forecast of US$5.75 billion to US$5.85 billion, alongside expected core constant-currency revenue growth of 5% to 7%.
The company also maintained its adjusted earnings-per-share forecast of US$12.00 to US$12.25.
Although quarterly results exceeded expectations, management did not increase its full-year outlook.
For investors anticipating accelerating growth, unchanged guidance may have reduced confidence that the earnings beat would translate into stronger performance over the remaining quarters.
However, maintaining guidance does not necessarily indicate deteriorating business conditions.
What Should ResMed Investors Watch Next?
Despite the share-price decline, ResMed continues to generate substantial cash flow.
Operating cash flow reached US$422 million during the quarter, while free cash flow totalled US$374 million.
The company also returned more than US$1 billion to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases, supported by operating cash flow and proceeds from the MatrixCare divestment.
Looking ahead, investors should monitor sleep device demand, mask sales, underlying software revenue growth and operating margins.
Any improvement in these areas, particularly if accompanied by stronger financial guidance, could influence market sentiment towards ResMed shares.
ResMed Share Price Outlook
ResMed’s approximately 6.5% decline demonstrates that beating earnings expectations does not always produce a positive market reaction.
The company continues to benefit from demand for sleep apnoea treatments, adjusted earnings growth and healthy cash generation.
However, slower consolidated revenue growth, weaker reported software sales and unchanged guidance have raised questions about its near-term growth trajectory.
For ASX investors, the key consideration is whether ResMed can maintain momentum in its core sleep technology business while delivering stronger overall revenue and earnings growth in future quarters.
