City Chic Share Price Surges After Trading Update
City Chic Collective Limited (ASX:CCX) shares jumped 13.89% on Wednesday, November 4, closing at A$0.041 as investors welcomed improving retail margins and expectations of a return to operating profitability. The stock gained A$0.005 from its previous close of A$0.036, reaching an intraday high of A$0.042. The rally followed a trading update covering the 18 weeks to November 1, highlighting stronger full-price sales across Australia and New Zealand. Despite weaker overall revenue, management’s reduced-discounting strategy is showing encouraging signs of improving margins.
Full-Price Store Sales Jump 19.6%
City Chic reported a 19.6% increase in comparable full-price store sales across Australia and New Zealand.
Overall comparable ANZ store sales increased 15.4%, while total store revenue grew 7.5%, despite the company operating seven fewer stores than a year earlier.
The improvement followed changes to product ranges, pricing and promotional activity designed to encourage customers to purchase at full price.
Group revenue excluding wholesale declined 1.7% year-on-year, but gross margin dollars increased 2.2%.
Meanwhile, group trading gross margin expanded by 240 basis points, highlighting stronger pricing discipline despite softer overall revenue.
US Sales Remain a Challenge
City Chic’s US operations continued facing difficult trading conditions, with comparable sales declining 12%.
The decline partly reflected reduced promotional activity as the retailer prioritised healthier margins over heavily discounted sales.
However, US comparable trading gross margin dollars increased 7.1%, indicating stronger margins despite weaker sales.
City Chic also reported that its US business remained profitable.
Nevertheless, rebuilding sustainable revenue growth across the American market remains an important challenge for management.
City Chic Targets Positive First-Half EBIT
Management expects City Chic to generate positive earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) during the first half of FY2027.
However, the forecast remains conditional on sales momentum continuing through the crucial Black Friday and Christmas trading period.
The company also expects to finish the half with a positive cash balance and no drawn debt.
These expectations suggest its turnaround strategy is gaining traction, although the full financial outcome remains uncertain.
Can City Chic Shares Continue Rising?
City Chic’s latest trading update provides encouraging evidence that reduced discounting is supporting stronger retail margins.
However, sustained profitability will depend on maintaining full-price demand while addressing weakness across online and US operations.
Investors will closely monitor Christmas trading and the company’s half-year results, expected in February 2027.
